JPG vs JPEG – Same Format, Different Extension

There is no technical difference between JPG and JPEG. They are identical image formats using JPEG compression. The only distinction is the file extension.

Why two extensions?

Early Windows limited extensions to three characters (`.jpg`). Unix and Mac used `.jpeg`. Both refer to the Joint Photographic Experts Group standard.

Which should you use?

Use `.jpg` for web URLs and general sharing — it's shorter and more common. Use `.jpeg` if a system requires the four-letter extension. Conversion between them is unnecessary; just rename.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rename .jpeg to .jpg?
