HEIC is Apple's default photo format on iPhones. It saves storage and preserves quality, but Android phones and many apps cannot open HEIC files natively. If someone AirDropped or messaged you iPhone photos that will not open, converting HEIC to JPG fixes the problem in seconds — no app store download required.

Why Android struggles with HEIC

HEIC uses HEVC compression, which Apple licenses and builds into iOS. Android support varies by manufacturer and Android version. Some newer Samsung and Google phones open HEIC in the gallery; many older devices show a broken thumbnail or an error.

Messaging apps often convert images on send, but original files shared via email, cloud links, or file transfer arrive as raw HEIC. Document editors, print shops, and social apps frequently reject the format.

JPG is the universal fallback. Converting once lets you view, edit, share, and upload the photo anywhere.

Browser conversion vs installing an app

The Play Store has HEIC converter apps, but many show ads, limit batch size, or upload files to their servers. A browser-based converter on your Android phone avoids installs entirely.

Chrome, Firefox, and Samsung Internet on modern Android support the WebAssembly libraries needed to decode HEIC locally. You open the converter page, pick files from your downloads or gallery, and save JPGs back to your device.

This approach works the same on Android tablets and phones. No storage spent on another app, no permissions to your entire photo library unless you choose files manually.

Step-by-step on your Android phone

Open Chrome and go to the Irreva HEIC to JPG converter. Tap upload and select HEIC files from your Downloads folder or file manager. Gallery pickers on some phones filter by format — use 'Files' if HEIC does not appear in Photos.

Choose output quality. For viewing and sharing, 85–90% is ideal. For editing later, use 95% or higher. Tap convert and wait a few seconds per image.

Download each JPG or the batch zip. Files land in your Downloads folder. From there, share via WhatsApp, attach to email, or open in any gallery app.

  • Use Chrome or Firefox on Android
  • Select HEIC files via file picker
  • Set JPG quality to 85–90% for sharing
  • Save JPGs to Downloads and share normally

Batch conversion and quality tips

If you received dozens of vacation photos in HEIC, batch mode converts the whole set at once. Download as a zip and extract on your phone or transfer to a PC.

Converting does not have to mean visible quality loss. HEIC already stores efficient data; exporting to JPG at 90% quality preserves what you see on an iPhone screen.

Keep originals if you might transfer them back to an Apple device later. Store JPG copies separately for Android sharing and editing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Android open HEIC without converting?

Some newer Android versions and gallery apps support HEIC, but support is inconsistent. Converting to JPG guarantees the file opens everywhere.

Does conversion reduce photo quality?

At 85–90% JPG quality, the difference is invisible for normal viewing. Extreme compression below 70% may show artifacts.

Can I convert HEIC to JPG on Android without an app?

Yes. Use a browser-based converter like Irreva. No Play Store install needed.

Why are my iPhone photos HEIC on Android?

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. When shared as original files rather than through apps that auto-convert, Android receives the native HEIC format.

Is it safe to convert personal photos online?

With Irreva, conversion runs locally in your browser. Your photos are not uploaded to a server, which is safer than cloud converters for private images.
